State Insurance Regulators Highlight Sector Risks, International Partnerships in Brussels

At the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers’ (ABIR) 18th Annual International Insurance Regulatory Dialogue in Brussels, Belgium, on Sept. 5, state insurance regulators discussed a variety of issues affecting the industry and regulators, including sector risks, international regulatory relationships, and resiliency efforts.

On the “The Changing Landscape of Reinsurance” panel, North Dakota Insurance Commissioner and ӰƵ (ӰƵ) President Jon Godfread addressed the key risks to the insurance sector, including the evolving investment landscape and the effects of geopolitical fragmentation, and the efforts of U.S. state insurance regulators to capture and supervise those risks effectively.

Nebraska Department of Insurance Director Eric Dunning, chair of the ӰƵ’s International Insurance Relations (G) Committee, addressed the ӰƵ’s international partnerships on the panel “Financial Stability Through Supervisory Trust and Recognition.” Specifically, he walked through the ӰƵ’s mutual recognition process.

On the “Using Reinsurance to Improve Resilience” panel, the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions’ Barbara Richardson discussed the state’s efforts to educate the public on wildfire resiliency, as well as the tools the ӰƵ is developing to improve regulators’ understanding of the gaps in their respective jurisdictions.

On the sidelines of the event, ӰƵ representatives met with the ABIR Board.
